An Teanga Bheo

I 2012 bhunaigh Órla Ní Slaic, iar-mhúinteoir meánscoile ó Mhuine Chonalláin ó dhúchas, an scoil teanga ‘An Teanga Bheo’ i mBéal an Átha. Cuireann An Teanga Bheo ranganna ar siúl do dhaoine óga taobh amuigh d’am scoile, ach ní gnáthranganna atá i gceist ach am chun spórt agus spraoi a bhaint as an teanga labhartha. Cuireann sí campaí Cásca agus campaí Samhraidh ar fáil chomh maith, rogha níos saoire atá ann do mhuintir Bhéal an Átha a gcuid gasúr a chur chuig campa Gaeilge áitiúil in ionad iad a chur chuig an nGaeltacht.

Bíonn An Teanga Bheo ag freastal ar dhaoine fásta chomh maith: ar thuismitheoirí atá ag iarraidh cúnaimh chun cuidiú a thabhairt dá ngasúir lena gcuid obair bhaile, agus le daoine a bhíonn orthu obair trí mheán na Gaeilge ó am go chéile –  ag cuidiú dóibh cur lena gcuid scileanna agus muinín i dtaobh na teanga de.
Bhí Órla ag iarraidh an bhéim a chur ar  an bhfocal ‘Beo’ agus í ag roghnú ainm dá cuid gnó, le cur ina luí ar dhaoine gur teanga bheo í an Ghaeilge. Gan dabht léiríonn An Teanga Bheo an bheocht atá ins an Ghaeilge i mBéal an Átha.

In 2012 Órla Ní Slaic, a former secondary school teacher from Bonniconlon, established the language school ‘An Teanga Bheo’ in Ballina. An Teanga Bheo provides Irish language classes to young people outside of school hours, but these are no ordinary classes, but classes designed to bring fun and games to using a living language. She also organises Easter and summer camps, and these local camps offer a more affordable option to parents than sending their children to the Gaeltacht.

An Teanga Bheo also caters for adults:  for parents looking for help so they can in turn help their children with their homework, and for people who use Irish at work from time to time – An Teanga Bheo helps them develop their skills and confidence in the language.

Órla has tried to emphasise the word ‘Beo’, or ‘Living’ in choosing the name for her business, to show people that Irish is a living language. There’s no doubt but that An Teanga Bheo showcases the life that’s in the Irish Language in Ballina.
