Brawn's Flowers

Tá siopa ag an mbláthadóir Tom Brawn i bPlás na Grúdlainne, Cathair na Mart le 22 bliain anuas. Cuireann Bláthanna Brawn bláthanna ar fáil do chuile ócáid a d’fhéadfaí smaoineamh air, agus le cúpla bliain anuas tá siad ag baint leas as an nGaeilge mar uirlis éifeachtach margaíochta.

Tá póstaer dátheangach taobh amuigh den siopa acu, agus cuirtear cártaí beannachta dátheangacha ar fáil leis na bláthanna ar ócáidí ar leith ar nós Lá Fhéile Vailíntín, Lá na Máithreacha agus ag am Nollaig chomh maith. Rinne Pamela Gray ó Chathair na Mart an obair deartha agus maisithe agus tá an-tóir go deo ar na cártaí seo de bharr an Ghaeilge á húsáid orthu ar bhealach nua-aimseartha agus tarraingteach.

Cé nach bhfuil móran Gaeilge ag Tom é féin, síleann sé go bhfuil sé tábhachtach í a úsáid mar is cuid dár gcultúr í. Deir sé go labhraíonn bláthanna le do shúil agus go labhraíonn an Ghaeilge le do shúil chomh maith, seasann sí amach ón ngnáth-théacs Béarla, agus taitníonn sé seo le daoine. Ar ndóigh labhraítear Gaeilge le do chluas i mBláthanna Brawn chomh maith, agus Claire Cusack a oibríonn leis gach deireadh seachtaine ag tapú chuile dheise a cuid Gaeilge a úsáid.

Tom Brawn has been running his florist shop in Brewery Place, Westport, for the last 22 years. Brawn's Flowers supply flowers for every occasion imaginable, and for the last number of years have been effectively using Irish as part of their marketing.

They have a bilingual poster outside their shop and supply bilingual greeting cards with their flowers on occasions such as St. Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ day and Christmas. Pamela Gray from Westport designed and decorated the greeting cards, and the way Irish has been incorporated into them in a modern and attractive way has seen them in great demand.

Even though Tom doesn’t speak much Irish, he believes it’s important still to use the language where possible as it’s part of our culture. He says that flowers speak to the eye, and that Irish speaks to the eye too.  It stands out from the familiar English text and people like it. Naturally Irish also speaks to the ear, and Claire Cusack who works in Bláthanna Brawn at the weekend takes every opportunity to use her Irish.
